The audio cassette, or Compact Cassette, was invented by Philips engineer Lou Ottens and introduced in 1963, initially for dictation but quickly becoming a revolutionary portable music format with the help of the Sony Walkman in 1979, dominating the 1970s and 80s for personal music, mixtapes, and home recording before being overtaken by CDs and digital formats in the 90s and 2000s, though it maintains a niche resurgence today for its analog charm.
